“For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.” (2Pe 1:8-9)

Do you think that if I told you, with words only, how to hang-glide that you would be able to go out and jump off a big cliff and successfully make it to the bottom?  Absolutely not, you would need time to exercise that knowledge by practicing with a real hang-glider in a safe environment before attempting such a stunt.  In similar fashion, knowledge alone does not guaranty success in our walk with Christ.  There is knowledge in Christ that can leave us unfruitful and barren.  If we as believers sit under sound teaching and fail to respond to that teaching by putting into practice the things we learn than we will not be fruitful nor abound.  As a person does this their spiritual senses begin to dull and they lose the ability to be challenged personally by God’s Word.   This continues until, as the scripture says, they lose all of their spiritual bearings and forget their position in Christ. 

“I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Mat 5:44)

Does this scripture cause you to cringe as you realize your inadequacy in the flesh OR has it become just words on paper and a catchy phrase to recite?  God desires more from us as the body of Christ; He wants our lives so that He can change them.  Respond to the Word as you read it, put into practice the things He reveals to you, cast off the hardness in your heart and He will meet you where you are at.  I have no doubt that you will fail, but I also know with all assurance that He will succeed and cause you to abound.

“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” (Rom 13:11-12)

“Porque si estas cosas están en vosotros, y abundan, no os dejarán estar ociosos ni sin fruto en cuanto al conocimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.  Pero el que no tiene estas cosas tiene la vista muy corta; es ciego, habiendo olvidado la purificación de sus antiguos pecados.” (2Pe 1:8-9)

¿Piensas por un momento que si yo te mostrara, con palabras solamente, como hacer ala delta que pudieras saltar de un precipicio grande y llegar a la tierra exitosamente?  ¡Absolutamente no!  Necesitarías tiempo para ejercer ese conocimiento por practicar antes de intentar hacer el vuelo.  De la misma manera, conocimiento solo no es suficiente para garantizar éxito en nuestro camino con Cristo.  Hay conocimiento que podemos tener en Cristo que nos puede dejar sin fruto y ocioso.  Si nosotros, como creyentes, fallamos de responder a las enseñanzas sanas por poner en práctica las cosas que aprendemos, entonces no vamos a abundar ni hacernos fructíferos.  Si un creyente lo hace así, sus sentidos espirituales van a ponerse embotados  y va a perder la capacidad de ser retado personalmente por la Palabra de Dios.  Si esto continua, las Escrituras nos dice, se va a desorientar y olvidar su posición en Cristo.

“Pero yo os digo: Amad a vuestros enemigos, bendecid a los que os maldicen, haced bien a los que os aborrecen, y orad por los que os ultrajan y os persiguen;” (Mat 5:44)

¿Te produce este verso vergüenza mientras te das cuenta de tu incapacidad de hacerlo?  ¿O ha llegado a ser palabas solas y un dicho pegadizo?  Nuestro Dios quiere más de nosotros como el Cuerpo de Cristo.  El quiere nuestras vidas para que las cambie.  Responda a la Palabra cuando lo leas.  Pon en práctica las cosas que te revela.  Quita la dureza que está en tu corazón y El te va a encontrar donde estas.  Yo no tengo ninguna duda que vas a fracasar PERO yo estoy completamente seguro que Él va a triunfar y hacerte abundar.

“Y esto, conociendo el tiempo, que es ya hora de levantarnos del sueño; porque ahora está más cerca de nosotros nuestra salvación que cuando creímos.  La noche está avanzada, y se acerca el día. Desechemos, pues, las obras de las tinieblas, y vistámonos las armas de la luz.” (Rom 13:11-12)

(5)  vosotros también, poniendo toda diligencia por esto mismo, añadid a vuestra fe virtud; a la virtud, conocimiento;
(6)  al conocimiento, dominio propio; al dominio propio, paciencia; a la paciencia, piedad;
(7)  a la piedad, afecto fraternal; y al afecto fraternal, amor.

¿Alguien te ha acusado alguna vez de ser una persona ingrata? Cuando Pedro dice “por esto mismo”, habla de que hemos sido salvos de la perdición (justificación) y también que Dios nos ha prometido una eternidad de gloria con El en el cielo (glorificación). Por esta razón debemos sentirnos una obligación personal de responder a estas promesas grandísimas por poner diligentemente en práctica las cosas que hemos aprendido.  El cristianismo no es una religión pasiva que solo existe para complacerme y ser como una decoración espiritual para mi estilo de vida.  “¿Mas quieres saber, hombre vano, que la fe sin obras es muerta? (Jas 2:20) Este tipo de fe de etiquetas me lleva a resbalar y caer.  Pablo, en Efesios, enfatiza que estamos metidos en una batalla espiritual y necesitamos estar firmes, llevando toda la armadura de Dios.

Santiago nos dice “Someteos, pues, a Dios; resistid al diablo, y huirá de vosotros.” (Jas 4:7)  Revisa la lista que hace Pedro y pide que Dio te ayude añadir estas calidades de tu vida.  Entonces después, esfuérzate de resistir al diablo y tu carne, poniendo diligentemente en práctica estas calidades en cada momento de cada día de tu vida.  Dios, sí, honrará tu pedida Y Dios, sí, honrará tu esfuerzo.

 ”Así que, hermanos, os ruego por las misericordias de Dios, que presentéis vuestros cuerpos en sacrificio vivo, santo, agradable a Dios, que es vuestro culto racional.”  (Rom 12:1)

(5)  But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
(6)  to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,
(7)  to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

Have you ever been accused of being an ingrate?   When Peter says “also for this very reason” He is speaking of the fact that we have been saved from perdition (justification) and also that we have been promised an eternity of glory with God in Heaven (glorification).  For this very reason we should feel personally obligated to respond to these great gifts by diligently putting into action the things we have learned.  Christianity is not a passive, feel-good, religion that a person can use to decorate their lifestyle.  “But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?” (Jas 2:20) This type of bumper-sticker faith leads to backsliding and falling away.  Paul, in Ephesians, stresses the fact that we are in a spiritual battle and need to stand firm, equipped with the whole armor of God. 

We are told to “submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (Jas 4:7)  Look at this list that Peter makes and pray that God would help you to add these qualities to your life.  Then make the effort to resist the enemy and your flesh, diligently putting into effect these qualities in a practical way in every moment of every day.  God will honor your request AND God will honor your effort. 

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” (Rom 12:1)

“by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2Pe 1:4)

Who wants to go to Heaven?  Writing has the unfortunate inability many times to express emotion and mood and that question could be read in several different ways.  Perhaps you read, “who in the world would want to go to Heaven”, indicating that Heaven is somehow a bad place to be.  If you read it this way please repent.  Or perhaps you read the question as, “what type of person wants to go to Heaven”, indicating that you would expect to see an exposition on the qualities of a person that seeks to please God.  Sorry to disappoint you but this isn’t what I meant either. 

The mood that the question originally carried as I wrote it was just like when I ask my kids “who wants ice cream?”  When I ask that question to my kids I already know the answer, they all want ice cream, that is unless they are feeling sick.  This is the way God is asking His children this question.  The answer should be an excited - “I do”.  We have been given great and precious promises that are meant to encourage and drive us to press towards our eventual glorification in the day that He calls us home to himself.  However, if for some reason death terrifies you or you have become overly preoccupied with the troubles in the world than you have become like my sick child who cannot enjoy the sweetness of ice cream because something has infected their body.

Do not let the cares of this world infect your walk with Christ.  Allowing these things in robs you of the blessings that God has intended for you to enjoy.  Remember, just like faith and hope are inextricably tied together, so are a lack of faith and fear.  So…who wants to go to Heaven?

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2Ti 1:7)

“por medio de las cuales nos ha dado preciosas y grandísimas promesas, para que por ellas llegaseis a ser participantes de la naturaleza divina, habiendo huido de la corrupción que hay en el mundo a causa de la concupiscencia” (2Pe 1:4)

¿Quién quiere ir al cielo?  El escribir tiene la lamentable incapacidad muchas veces de expresar emoción y el estado de ánimo y esta pregunta se puede leer de varias maneras diferentes.  Quizás usted lea: ¿Quién en el mundo querría ir al cielo?  Esta manera indica que el cielo es de alguna manera un lugar malo para estar.  Si lo leer esta forma que se arrepienta por favor.  O tal vez usted lea la cuestión, como: ¿Qué tipo de persona quiere ir al cielo?  Esta manera indica que espera ver una exposición sobre las cualidades de una persona que procura agradar a Dios.  Lo siento decepcionarle pero esto no es lo que quería decir tampoco. 

La emoción que llevó  la pregunta original era como cuando pregunte a mis hijos: ¿Quién desea helado?  Cuando hago esa pregunta a mis hijos ya sé la respuesta, todos quieren helado, a menos que se sienten enfermos.  Esta es la forma en que Dios hace a sus hijos esta pregunta.  La respuesta debe ser un emocionado: ¡Quiero ir!  Hemos sido dado grandes y preciosos promesas que pretenden alentarnos e impulsarnos seguir adelante hacia nuestro glorificación eventual el día en que Él nos llama a sí mismo.  Sin embargo, si por alguna razón tiene temor de muerte o ha vuelto demasiado preocupado con los problemas en el mundo, se ha vuelto como mi hijo enfermo que no puede disfrutar de la dulzura de helado porque algo ha infectado a su cuerpo.

No deje que las preocupaciones de este mundo infectar su caminata con Cristo.  Estas cosas al entrar le robará de las bendiciones que Dios tiene pensado dar a ud.  Recuerde, al igual que la fe y la esperanza están inextricablemente conectados, así que son la falta de fe y el miedo.  ¿Así que…quién quiere ir al cielo?

“Porque no nos ha dado Dios espíritu de cobardía, sino de poder, de amor y de dominio propio.” (2Ti 1:7)

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue (2Pe 1:3)

In doing follow-up counseling with the 400+ people that came forward at the altar call during this October’s Men’s Conference I found out some very useful information.  At least 350 of those coming forward were already Christians that had fallen away and felt they needed to rededicate their lives to the Lord.  Of those 350 or so I had the opportunity to counsel and pray with around 20 people, all of which had one very important thing in common:  they had all stopped studying their Bibles well before they fell away.

Peter tells us that through knowledge about Jesus Christ that we have been given ALL the things we need to live a godly life.  So how is it that people who have been given this very complete knowledge can end up back in the world wrapped up in the vices of their former lives?   Very simply they stop reading and responding to the Word.  Remember that God’s Word is dynamic, meeting us where we are at, in each situation and every trail, teaching us how to act and react.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb 4:12)

We have been given all knowledge in the form of God’s Word but we have a responsibility to seek that knowledge and wisdom on a daily basis if we want it to have any tangible effect on our lives.  This may seem overwhelming to many but the fact is that God is not interested in the quantity of scripture you read but the quality of the time you spend in what you do read.  I encourage you to take a couple of verses a day and spend 15-30 minutes reading and praying about them.  If you do this I know that God will honor the time you spend by revealing all the knowledge you personally need for your life and godliness.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2Ti 2:15)

Como todas las cosas que pertenecen a la vida y a la piedad nos han sido dadas por su divino poder, mediante el conocimiento de aquel que nos llamó por su gloria y excelencia (2Pe 1:3)

Mientras participaba en el aconsejar de las más de 400 personas que respondieron a la invitación durante el congreso de varones en Octubre, descubrí alguna información muy útil.  Por lo menos 350 de los que respondieron ya eran cristianos que habían caído y se sentían que necesitaban volver a dedicar sus vidas al Señor.  De esas 350 personas yo tenía la oportunidad de hablar con 20, y todas tenían algo en común: Todos ellos habían dejado de estudiar sus Biblias bien antes de caerse.

Pedro nos dice que a través del conocimiento sobre Cristo Jesus que hemos recibido TODAS las cosas que necesitamos para vivir una vida santa.  ¿Entonces, como es que las personas que han recibido este conocimiento perfecto terminan regresando a los vicios de sus vidas anteriores?  Ellos simplemente dejan de leer y responder la Palabra de Dios.  Recuerda que la Palabra de Dios es dinámica, nos encuentra donde estamos, en cada situación y cada prueba, ensenándonos como comportarnos y reaccionar.

“Porque la palabra de Dios es viva y eficaz, y más cortante que toda espada de dos filos; y penetra hasta partir el alma y el espíritu, las coyunturas y los tuétanos, y discierne los pensamientos y las intenciones del corazón.” (Heb 4:12)

Todos nosotros hemos recibido conocimiento perfecto en la forma de la Palabra de Dios pero tenemos una responsabilidad de buscar este conocimiento y sabiduría diariamente si queremos que tenga efecto en nuestras vidas.  Quizás esto parezca difícil pero Dios no es interesado en la cantidad de escrituras que lees sino la calidad del tiempo que pasas con El en su Palabra.  Yo te impulso leer dos o tres versos cada día, pasando 15-30 minutos en leer y oración en ellos.  Si hagas esto yo se que Dios honrará el tiempo que pasas por revelar todo el conocimiento que necesitas personalmente para tu vida y tu santidad.

“Procura con diligencia presentarte a Dios aprobado, como obrero que no tiene de qué avergonzarse, que usa bien la palabra de verdad.” (2Ti 2:15)

Simón Pedro, siervo y apóstol de Jesucristo (2Pe 1:1a)

Pedro era un hombre muy importante.  Pedro ha sido escogido como un de los doce de entre la gran cantidad de seguidores que tenia Jesus.  Pedro ha sido uno de los tres invitados al monte de transfiguración donde vio nuestro Señor en su gloria. Y, aunque había fracasado miserablemente por negar al Señor antes de su crucifixión, fue el que dio el mensaje poderoso en el día de Pentecostés.  Pedro era un líder y un pilar de la iglesia del primer siglo, un hombre que a decir de todos merecía el respeto de los de la iglesia.  Sin embargo es interesante que no se presentara como apóstol primero y siervo segundo pero más bien que se identifica como esclavo de Dios primero.

Pedro tenía un entendimiento correcto de sí mismo cuando escribió esta carta. Habiendo fracasado tan miserablemente tantas veces en la mera presencia del Señor, Pedro sabía que su primera vocación era lo de siervo.  Su titulo y autoridad como apóstol tomaba segunda posición a la de ser esclavo de Cristo Jesus y siervo de todos.  Hay demasiadas organizaciones y personas (ambos líderes y congregantes) que ponen énfasis incorrecto en los títulos y posición del liderazgo de la iglesia.  Jesus dijo a sus discípulos mientras discutían entre sí mismos sobre quien iba a obtener la posición más alta en el Reino “el que quiera hacerse grande entre vosotros será vuestro servidor, y el que de vosotros quiera ser el primero, será siervo de todos.  Porque el Hijo del Hombre no vino para ser servido, sino para servir, y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos.” (Mar 10:43b-45)

¿Pones el liderazgo de la iglesia en un pedestal que no puede aguantar?  ¿Eres un pastor quien, como lo hace en el mundo, “enseñoreas” y “ejerces sobre su congregación potestad”?  Si haces cualquiera de los dos necesitas arrepentirte. Cierto que hay veces en donde, como líder, necesitas ejercer la autoridad que Dios te ha dado.  Pero hay que cuidarte en estas situaciones, entrando en ellas con mucha oración y mansedumbre.  Pablo nos dice que “si alguno fuere sorprendido en alguna falta, vosotros que sois espirituales, restauradle con espíritu de mansedumbre, considerándote a ti mismo, no sea que tú también seas tentado.” (Gal 6:1)

Todos nosotros estamos al pie de la cruz, compartiendo a la misma fe que nos dio nuestro Señor y Salvador Cristo Jesus.  Quitémonos de nosotros toda cosa mundana como codicia de poder y idolatría, vaciándonos de todo para que el nos llene hasta superabundancia.  Solo después de hacer esto podremos desempeñar nuestra vocación como siervos de Cristo Jesus.

Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ (2Pe 1:1a)

Peter was an important man.  Peter had been chosen as one of 12 disciples amongst the many followers that Jesus had.  Peter had been one of three that had been invited to the mount to see Jesus transfigured in all of His glory. And even though he had failed miserably by denying the Lord before His crucifixion, he was the one to deliver the mighty message at Pentecost.  Peter was a leader and pillar of the early church, a man that by all worldly accounts deserved the respect of those in the church.  And yet it is interesting that he does not introduce himself as an apostle first and servant last but rather indentifies himself as a servant first. 

Peter had a correct understanding of himself when he penned this epistle.  Having failed so miserably on so many occasions in the very physical presence of the Lord, Peter knew that his first calling was that of bondservant.  Peter’s apostolic title and authority were second to his position and calling as a slave of Jesus Christ and a servant to all.  Too many organizations and people (leaders and members) put incorrect emphasis on the titles and status of church leadership.  Jesus said to His disciples as they argued who would get the most powerful position in the Kingdom “whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mar 10:43b-45)

Do you put your church leaders on a pedestal they themselves can’t handle?  Are you a Pastor who like the world “lords” and “exercises great authority” over your congregation?  If you are either than you need to repent.  While there are definitely times where the authority given to a leader needs to be exercised, those situations need to be entered into prayerfully and gently.  Paul tells us that “if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” (Gal 6:1)

We all stand at the foot of the cross, sharing that same precious faith that was given to us by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Let’s put away worldly things like striving for power and making idols our of people, emptying ourselves of everything we have so that He can fill us to overflowing.  Then and only then can we, like Peter, fulfill our calling as bondservants of Jesus Christ.
